The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

So today I did the ALS ice bucket challenge with two of my out-of-school friends and my sister (late, I know, because I was recovering from sickness), and it was freezing!  Not to mention, my mum totally messed up and didn't record it the first time, so we had to do it again.  I also forgot a change of underwear...

However, I'm not here to blog about my ice bucket challenge.  I'm not even here to blog about Taylor Swift's or Barack Obama's or any other famous figure pouring cold water over themselves.  No.  I'm here to talk about Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease.  Basically, it causes the ability of the brain to control parts of the body to be lost, progressively.  This means that people with ALS slowly lose their ability to function their hands, arms, legs, and eventually their heart and lungs.  For those of you who know who Stephen Hawking is, ALS is something like what he has.

I actually knew a girl in primary school who had a degenerative muscle disease.  At the time she was already in a wheelchair.  When I first knew her she could still walk a little, but she was slowly unable to walk at all.  Then she started losing movement in her arms.  She was unable to do pretty braids anymore.  Just imagine how scary it would be, knowing that you would eventually lose all movement, that you would eventually be unable to breathe on your own.

Watch this whole video to understand a little more...

Yeah, so for the masses of people who have done the challenge, or even if you haven't, donate now at ALS donate to support research for a cure to this terrifying disease.

The Prince and the Garland

Tonight I went to watch my friend's Indian dance performance entitled 'The Prince and the Garland'.  She goes to this dance school, and they have a concert or something every two years.  Basically, the plot of 'The Prince and the Garland' goes like this...

Once upon a time a prince fell in love with one of his court dancers.  However, his father, the King, wasn't happy with this.  The King employed a witch doctor to make the court dancer an outcast.  He did this by turning her into a mermaid, having her exiled into the sea.  This made the Prince very upset, and every full moon he would drop a garland into the ocean, in hope that it would reach his beloved.  One full moon a saint, disguised as a turtle, found the mermaid.  She told him her story and he felt sorry for her, and vowed to reunite her with her prince.  That night, the saint led the mermaid back to shore and turned her back into a dancer.  She returned to her prince and they got married, living happily ever after.

At the start of the performance, my friends and I were all pretty much just wondering when on earth our friend was going to come on stage.  The performance started off with a sort of prologue thing, which was pretty much just a series of dances.  I spent most of the time gushing at the elaborate and beautiful costumes, which were complete with long skirts, twisted hair and golden jewellery, and whispering to my friends next to me about how cute the littlies were.  They were all such good dancers, even the little ones.  They all did the correct graceful arm movements and jumps in sync.

Then there was a 20 minute intermission where I stuffed myself with cupcakes, curry puffs and apple juice.  I actually saw so many people I know at the performance.  First of all there were my friends that I was sitting with of course.  I also saw one of my other friends, who actually wanted to go to some other hip hop thing with Jai Waetford's relative in it, but had been forced to come to support her good friend, dancing as the prince.  There were also two sisters from my school in the dance performance.  One of them is in my sister's grade and is also in my band.  The other is an annoying grade 8 who is apparently nice.  It also turns out one of my other friend's grandma and mum were there too.  Huh.  What a coincidence!

Finally, in the second half, my friend came on.  She was dancing as the court dancer, the main character of course. ;)  She looked so beautiful up there!  Although, when I saw her after, I saw that her face was caked in make up.  I guess that's stage make up for you!

Anyway, I had a great cultural night watching a lovely performance.  It's now 11pm, which isn't actually that late, but I have a... cold day tomorrow ;)

Thanks for reading!
Namaste.

Shake It Off

I know it's a little late but I finally listened and watched the new music video of Taylor Swift's new song, 'Shake It Off''.  At first I didn't really like it and I thought, 'Oh no.  Taylor's trying to change her image.  She's trying to change her music.'  I thought it was just a music video showcasing how bad at dancing Taylor is.  But then I listened to the lyrics and I realised Taylor is doing what she always does.  She's writing her feelings through her music, like a diary, as usual.

Shake It Off is about not caring what other people say or think about you and 'shaking it off''.  Taylor sings, "I go on to many dates, But I can't make 'em stay, At least that's what people say".  It's true though.  That is what so many people say.  She then sings, "It's like I got this music, In my mind
Saying, "It's gonna be alright."  Now I think she's referring to her music helping her get through these haters.  She keeps moving, dancing, not caring.

'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off

Yess.  That's so true Taylor.  These people do exist and they're gonna do what they do and we can't stop it.  There will always be people that don't like you or think badly of you.  Why not shake it off?  They don't matter anyway.

Honestly, despite the usual Taylor message and honesty, I don't like this song as much as a lot of her old songs.  Although, I do admit, this song is very very catchy.  I've got it stuck in my head right now.  The players gonna play play play play play... Haha.

Anyway, I've decided to just list some of my favourite Taylor Swift songs by album.  I've loved her music since I was 9 years old (when I saw the Hannah Montana movie) and she's actually played such a big part in my childhood.  So here's some of her lovely songs you should listen to:

From Taylor Swift (self titled):

Mary's Song:
Okay, I swear this is the cutest song ever.  I just wish there was a music video for it.  I love Taylor's romantic love stories and fantasies.  Seriously, listen to it and you'll love it too.  Make sure you play close attention to the lyrics of this one. <3

From Fearless:

Love Story:
It's Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending.  A little princess fairytale.  We were both young when I first saw you.  I close my eyes and the flashback starts.  I'm standing there.  On a balcony in summer air. God I love this song.  Know all the lyrics.  Fun fact, did you know she wrote this in half an hour?

You Belong With Me:
Omigosh this is my favourite of all time!!!  This music video was wow and that guy from Hannah Montana the movie was there, and this got me fantasizing about having a cute neighbour.  Haha.  She wears short skirts.  I wear t-shirts.  She's cheer captain and I'm on the bleachers.  I remember when I was 9, my friends and I were sitting in the car and we were just belting this song out on full volume.  I still do that regularly.  In the car, in the change rooms at school.  Love you Taylor.

From Speak Now:

Mine:
As Taylor grows up so do her love stories...

The Story of Us:
I just love the beat, the music video and the concept.  It's awkward cos the guy she used to be with is there.  There's an elephant in the room and it's impossible to overlook.  What do you do when this happens?  The music video has some awesome dancing, a nerdy guy, a quirky little library and a story book snapped shut.  The ending is great too.  It's so true and relatable I guess.

Back to December:
Turns out freedom ain't nothing but missing you wishin I'd realised what I had when you were mine Fun fact, this slow lovely song was written about none other than Taylor Lautner.  They could've had little Taylor children and a Taylor dog too!!!  Did you know she actually sang this to him at an awards ceremony thing?  Good on you Taylor.  So this is me swallowing my pride standing in front of you saying I'm sorry for that night.

From Red:

Red:
Losing him was blue like I've never known.  Missing him was dark grey all alone.  Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you never met.  And loving him was red.  I love how she uses colours to convey all the feelings she has.  You know, Taylor is actually amazing at English and poetry.  She probably got As for that back in school.

I Knew You Were Trouble:
Haha who doesn't love this song?  I just remember always singing this to one of my friends because apparently she was 'trouble'.  I also remember that goat adaption.  Baa Baa Baa...

Yeah, so that was the evolution of me and Taylor Swift music.  Another fun fact, you know how in her albums there are booklets with all the songs and lyrics, and there are random capital letters in the lyrics?  Well, if you write all the capital letters per song down, it gives you a clue as to what the song really is about.

Love love love Taylor.  Go listen to more of her music if you haven't already.  Stop being a hater that's gonna hate.

Love,
M

The Liebster Award

I was recently nominated for this awesome thing called the Liebster Award!  So thank you so much Emily from Life of Em for nominating me!

What is the Liebster Award?
Well, from what I've seen, the Liebster Award is an award to new bloggers with under 200 followers.  It's a way for people to discover new blogs and to get to know a little bit about the blogger.  I think of it like the blogging version of the ice bucket challenge (which I refuse to do).  Apparently, according to my nominator, Liebster is a German word meaning dearest, lovely, pleasent and valued.  So it seems to be a pretty nice award to receive.

Here are the rules for this award...
  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you
  2. Answer the 11 questions they set you
  3. Nominate 11 new bloggers to win the award (they must have under 200 followers and it cannot be the person you nominated you)
  4. Set them 11 questions to answer then contact them explaining the instructions
I guess it's time to answer the questions...

1. When did you start your blog?
I started it last Thursday while I was sick, which was the 21st of August.  Had it for about 6 days now.  Almost a week ;)

2. If you could meet one person in the world who would it be and why?
Uhmmm... I think I'm going to go with Barrack Obama, cos he's the president of America and all...

3. Reason behind your blog name?
I called my life 'The Life of Little Me' because this blog reflects my life, or bits of it anyway.  I just like sharing the stuff I'm interested in and enjoy doing, and some of the pessimistic stuff going on in my head.  I can be pretty honest.

4. Favourite way to relax?
Watching a movie or having a TV show marathon while eating some good old unlimited junk food <3

5. Where do you usually blog?
Well, I'm blogging from my laptop.  I usually do it from my desk in my room but sometimes I'll be on the couch or the dining table.  Who knows?  I can guarantee I will never blog on the toilet though...

6. Favourite high street store?
If I'm being completely honest here, I don't really know what a high street store is.  I'm guessing you're referring to Louis Vuitton and Chanel and stuff?  They're all great (and expensive) and I love gushing at their amazing stuff.  I'm just going to name one of my favourite clothes shops as an answer instead, and that's Valleygirl.

7. Favourite music artist?
I love Taylor Swift and all, but at the moment my favourite is probably either Beyoncé, Adele or Katy Perry.

8. Where do you see your blog in 5 years?
Hmmm... I'm hoping it still exists first of all.  I guess I expect to see many posts on my life and thoughts, and I hope to have built up on some readers I guess.  So go follow if you're reading this.  ;) ;)

9. What is your favourite topic to blog about?
I don't really know yet, seeing as I haven't had my blog for long enough.  I guess it's probably my personal issues going on in my head, because blogging seems pretty therapeutic in a way.

10. Instagram, Tumblr or Twitter and why?
Instagram definitely!  It's where I do most of my social media stalking.  Wow that sounded creepy.  Haha don't worry.  I like the pictures as I go so they know what I'm doing.

11. Why did you start blogging?
Well, my friend started a blog and showed me, and I thought it looked fun so I made one too.  I wanted to share some of my thoughts and experiences, just like she was.  So thank you J.  I've nominated you below. :)

Thanks for reading.  Here's who I'm nominating...

J from Journeys' of My Beating Heart
Tshi from 365 Paper Dolls and Counting...
Rachel from A Bit of Rachel
Bloggers from Aesthete the Blog
Czarina from A Cup of Mae
Nora from MesMemos
Riza from Rzzzp
Cora from Bookworm Diaries
Dan from Cup of Loveliness
Jasmine from xprincessjars
Morningtime4 from The Ups and Downs of My Not-so-average Life

And here are the questions they will have to answer...
  1. Why did you start your blog?
  2. What TV shows do you watch?
  3. What are you wearing right now?
  4. Have you ever been in love?
  5. Have you ever kept a diary?
  6. What are three music artists you like?
  7. Where do you usually blog from?
  8. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
  9. What are a few books you like?
  10. What's your favourite food?
  11. What's your favourite social media?

Thanks for reading this challenge and I hope those nominated have fun doing it!

xx

A Friendship Drifts Away

A wet and gloomy day, perfect for feeling down.  Today I went back to school with the usual classes, friends and after school activities. There was just this one thing bringing me down.  In fact, it's been doing that since the term started.  That's the thing about things that bother me.  I grab hold of them and won't let go until they go away or I change my opinion completely.

I feel as if this friend is drifting away and there's nothing I can do about it.  I've felt like this since the end of last term, but I thought the holidays would fix it and we'd be back to normal by now.  It was actually alright in the holidays, better than now anyway.  But then school came back.

At first I thought she had just changed a little, that she now talked less, that she now sent one word texts rather than paragraphs.  That was until I realised that she was acting the same to everybody else, just not me.  She still talks to everyone else, laughs with them.  Just not me.

We used to be so much closer.  Not best friends or anything, but I'd go to her house, we had sleepovers together, we went shopping together.  I used to be comfortable talking to her, but now I'm not.  Now everything is awkward.  I don't know what to talk about anymore.  We never laugh anymore.  I don't know what happened.  Now whenever she talks to others, goes out with others, I feel a pang because I realise we're not really friends anymore.

There's nothing I can do about it though.  Believe me, I've tried.  We're stuck in a stale mate.  We're still in classes together but we don't walk between them together anymore.  We still text but there are never any conversations anymore.  We don't talk about anything.

The sad thing is that she probably doesn't realise it's happening.  It's just me.  I'm the one noticing that we never talk.  I'm the one feeling hurt that I'm losing a friend.  I just hope this won't continue until we're really not friends anymore.  I hope this isn't a natural drifting away.  It hurts, you know?

Until anything changes I guess I'll just be stuck.  I can keep talking frequently, keep texting those one words, but nothing will change.  I just have to deal with it and be grateful for all my other friends.  Throughout life I will lose many more friends, and this may or may not be my first.

I'm sorry if I've depressed you.  Who knew typing everything out could calm the mind so much?

Love,
M

Winter Coats and Pretty Jackets

Guess what?  Today I left the house for the first time in 3 days!  Sure my voice sounded funny and I coughed every 30 seconds, but still.  I went shopping with my favourite shopping buddy, my Mummy (mostly because she pays, but she also has pretty good fashion sense).  I ended up buying a really pretty jacket, so now I've decided to show off my favourite winter coats and jackets.  The coats are perfect for winter, as mentioned, and the jackets will be great for the upcoming spring, or autumn depending on your hemisphere.
Sorry about the photography though. I couldn't be bothered to take new photos so I've taken old pictures of myself in the coats and jackets and cut my head off, cos I'm paranoid of the internet like that.

Anyway,

I got this fancy little red coat from Forever New.  Funny story, I had been at the mall with my friends and we caught sight of these beautiful coats.  Of course we went inside to look at them and we just stood there gushing at all the stuff we couldn't afford.  Then, later when my mum came to pick me up, I told her about the coats.  She asked me to show her, and I did.  Then she picked one out and asked me to try it on, and I did.  After trying it on I came out of the change rooms to find none other than one of my friends from earlier with her mum, trying on one of the coats too.  So now both me and my friend have fancy Forever New coats :)

This coat is super comfortable, warm and casual.  I got it from Zara in Paris back in 2012.  It originally came with a belt but I may or may not have broken it...  It doesn't matter though.  When zipped up, the coat is nice and fitting around the waist, so it doesn't look bulky or anything.  I'm not sure if this is just because I've grown so much since 2012, or because it's actually designed like that.  Anyway, I love this coat.  Black seems to go with everything.

I have this lovely jacket in two colours: the green as seen in the image, and a salmon fluro pink.  I know, the pink sounds really outrageous, but it's not really actually.  Although, sometimes I think it is which is why I don't wear it as often.  I got these two jackets from some place called Katies, according to the tags anyway.  They go well with dresses, jeans, anything.  In fact, I'm pretty sure I wore them to both my school socials.

Okay okay.  I admit, this isn't a picture of me.  You can tell by the hair.  It is a picture taken on my camera though, so I didn't get it from the internet.  I just couldn't find a picture of myself in my denim jacket.  Everybody needs a denim jacket.  I got mine on sale from Just Jeans.  The only reason I don't wear it so often is because I wear jeans a lot, and denim on denim just doesn't work.  Denim jackets do go well with dresses and skirts though.

And this is the jacket that I got today!!!  Isn't it lovely?  It's like a formal bikers jacket or something.  It's comfortable, and it goes with my jeans.  I got it from Bloch, which is where I used to buy my leotards and ballet shoes from when I did dance, which is unusual.  Sorry if the picture's a little off putting.  It was taken by my sister in my backyard since I had no pictures of myself in it yet.  Hopefully I'll be wearing this jacket more in days to come ;)

Well, thanks for reading about my coats of all things.

Love,
M

The One That Stays At Home

Tonight there was a party.  The pictures are all over instagram.  There's also a couple on snap chat.  Then there's another friend.  She's going to the movies, probably with some of my other friends.  Yesterday she went to the shops with more friends.  Other people had a sleepover just yesterday night.  I'm pretty sure they had one last weekend too.  In fact, I'm pretty sure there were another two big parties last weekend, and a birthday dinner too.

And then there's me.  Here I am.  I'm sitting at home watching TV, going on my laptop, doing my English assignment...  What I don't understand is how these people can meet up with friends so much, and why?  The last time someone came to my house was Tuesday.  The last time I went somewhere with my friends (not including organised activities) must've been not last weekend but the weekend before.  I don't even remember the last party I went to.

I'm left with a sense of FOMO, a sense that I don't have enough fun.  Not as much fun as a lot of people in my grade anyway.  I get paranoid that everyone is out except for me, and I'm missing out on something, or I've just been uninvited.  One of my messages doesn't get 'delivered' and I automatically think they're out at the movies and I wasn't invited.

I don't know.  Maybe this is a side effect from my social isolation after being sick and not seeing anybody for 3 whole days.  I'm probably blowing the amount of 'fun' people are having out of proportion.  I should really be thinking about the 3 quarters of my grade that probably aren't doing anything tonight.  Someone went to buy sneakers, someone just posted something on their blog, someone just snap chatted me about chickens, someone sent me a Fifty Shades of Grey trailer adapted into Frozen.  There are obviously others who aren't partying right now either.  In fact, I believe the party's over.

You know what?  Why do I even care?  A lot of these people are simply acquaintances, not friends.  If I want to go out, well all I have to do is make plans.

Honestly, at the moment all I want is for this weekend to end.  I'm sick of being sick and I think I'm in need of some human face to face contact.

Now I'm going to pick up my phone and text whoever's texting me (they're obviously not partying), or maybe I'll call someone.

If you're reading this, I'm surprised you got through that load of rambling.

M

Top 10 Chick Flicks

I'm actually having a sick day today, and it's the worst.  You know those days where you're going to school and you're wishing you were sick so you can stay home?  Yeah well trust me, being sick isn't worth it.  School definitely trumps having a thumping headache and being unable to breathe without it hurting.  Anyhow, sick days, after girly sleepovers and lazy Friday nights, are also the best days to watch a chick flick or two.

So I've listed 10 amazing chick flicks/rom coms below:

1. She's the Man
Okay, so who doesn't love it when a girl pretends to be a boy to play soccer?  This movie is hilarious and full of drama.  It features Amanda Bynes back when she was good at acting, and CHANNING TATUM, need I say more?

2. Mean Girls
I'm sure you've all heard this one before.  This movie is seriously the most famous well-known most quoted chick flick of all time.  It's pretty much about mean girls if you didn't know that already.  It features Lindsey Lohan, another actress gone bad.  What is it with that?  There's also Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried, who both became really famous, and then there's that brunette girl that just went nowhere... haha.  So if you've never seen this movie before, I strongly advise you do if you don't want to suffer the wrath of mean girls (see what I did there).

3. Wild Child
The wild American girl gets sent to an uptight British boarding school.  This movie is all about finding yourself and good friends, which is portrayed in a hilarious way.  There's also some romance with none other than the gorgeous Alex Pettyfer.

4. Clueless
Based on the classic, Emma, this movie is the epitome of high school in the 90s.  There's boys with baggy pants, skateboards, those weird little telephone things and some weird fashion.  I love how in this movie Cher is so popular and powerful, yet she's also so clueless.  Her romance with **** (sorry no spoilers) is also so soooo cute.

5.  Life As We Know It
I for one love hate to love relationships.  Holly and Eric are complete opposites.  She's uptight and loves cooking, and he's a sport commentator who's also a bit of a player.  They also completely hate each other.  Then their best friends die and leave them with a baby to look after together.  You can guess what happens next ;) ;).  Katherine Heigl, who plays Holly, is actually in a lot of other great rom coms.  You should go check some of those out too.

6. 10 Things I Hate About You
Oh god I love this movie.  It's so romantic and oh gosh.  It's set in 1999 so it's not the most modern, but don't let that turn you off.  This movie is so amazing.  I don't know how to describe it.  It's got Heath Ledger acting as the bad boy.  Then there's Julia Styles, acting as a bit of an outcast.  Yeah, just watch it.  Trust me you won't regret it.  Although, if you want a more modern version try watching Prom.  The main romance is almost the same, but Prom is still nowhere near 10 Things I Hate About You.

7. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
Ahahahaha this movie is hilarious!  It's sort of like the battle of the sexes.  Andy is a reporter writing an article entitled 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days'.  Benjamin is a sort of advertiser, trying to prove that he can get a girl to fall in love with him by a party, which happens in 10 days.  Oh, the stunts Andy pulls trying to get him to break up with her, but he never does obviously.  Haha just watch it.

8. The Proposal
It's another funny one.  Sandra Bullock acts as a boss who forces her assistant, Ryan Reynolds, to marry her so that she can stay in the country.  To prove they're really 'in love' he has to take her back to his home town to spend the weekend with his family.  Oh man the things that happen there...

9. What Happens in Vegas
Two troubled drunken people get hitched in Vegas.  Then, what do you know, the next morning one of them scores a jackpot.  The couple fight over the money and end up having to live life as a married couple if they want a shot at having any of it.  Yay.  I love it when two people that hate each other are forced to live together.  It's also Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher in their younger years.  I mean, how much better looking can you get?

10. Bring It On: In It To Win It
Honestly, I love all the Bring It Ons, but this one has to be my favourite.  I'm not sure why but I used to be happy to watch it over and over again.  Maybe it's because Ashley Benson is really pretty and the guy she ends up with is really hot, from what I remember anyway.  Basically, this movie is set at a cheer camp where two teams are cheer battling for the cheer title (see how I just added cheer before everything).  So what happens when these two teams are forced to combine?

Well I hope this list has been somewhat helpful for you chick flick hunting people.  For more information on these movies or similar movies go to IMDB, the best website ever for anything to do with movies and TV shows.

Enjoy!

M

I'm Starting a Blog

Hi there,

So as you can see, I've created a blog.  I'm not really sure why though.  I guess it's just something to do.  I'm always looking for new stuff to do, and if you're looking for something to do too, why not read my blog? ;)

Just so you know, the only experience with blogging I have is through watching Gossip Girl, which by the way I finished recently and it was amazing, no matter how trashy people say it is.  Anyway, what happened was my friend started a blog, and when she showed it to me I was like, 'that actually sounds kinda fun.  Maybe I should start one.'  So here I am...

What can you expect from this blog?  Well, judging from what I called it, 'The Life of Little Me', this blog will contain snap shots of my life and my endless supply of stuff to do.  You'll be seeing a lot of stuff on movies, TV shows, books and some art, fashion, maybe a little cooking.  I'll also be posting some of my overthought analyses on friends, family and life in general (sorry about that), and there'll also be some ranting too, because I get annoyed.

Hopefully this blog will be fun to read, and maybe even be useful to some.
Thanks for reading.

Love,
M
